Over Fifty Dead in Philippines Quake

(MENAFN) The death toll from a powerful earthquake that rocked the southern Philippines earlier this week has climbed to 55, authorities confirmed Thursday, as search and rescue teams intensified operations across the hardest-hit areas of Mindanao.

Dozens more remain injured and several others are still unaccounted for, with widespread destruction continuing to hamper relief efforts across the region.

According to media, local disaster management officials confirmed the updated casualty figure after additional bodies were pulled from collapsed structures and landslide-devastated communities. Rescue operations face mounting obstacles, including relentless aftershocks, structurally unstable buildings, and severely damaged access roads leading to affected towns.

The 7.8-magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Mindanao, triggering widespread panic across the southern Philippines and inflicting extensive damage on homes, schools, hospitals, and critical public infrastructure. General Santos City and parts of Sarangani province ranked among the worst-affected areas, with authorities declaring states of calamity to fast-track emergency response and relief distribution.

Thousands of displaced residents have sought refuge in evacuation centers as officials work to assess structural damage and deliver food, water, and medical aid. The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology has recorded numerous aftershocks since the initial quake, prompting urgent warnings for residents to stay clear of damaged buildings.

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. pledged full government support for affected communities and directed national agencies to accelerate recovery and rehabilitation efforts.

The Philippines sits along the Pacific Ring of Fire, one of the world's most seismically volatile regions, making devastating earthquakes a recurring threat across the archipelago.
