Secret Service Responds to Shooting Near White House
(MENAFN) The US Secret Service said on Monday that its agents responded to an officer-involved shooting close to the White House complex in Washington, DC.
According to the agency in a post on US social media platform X, the incident occurred at 15th Street and Independence Avenue, prompting an immediate emergency response.
"U.S. Secret Service personnel are on the scene of an officer-involved shooting at 15th Street and Independence Avenue in Washington, D.C.," authorities urged the public to stay away from the area as emergency teams continued managing the situation. The agency also confirmed that a person was shot by law enforcement, although their condition was not immediately known.
Officials later provided further details, saying the incident involved a confrontation after officers identified an individual behaving in a suspicious manner near the White House perimeter. During the encounter, the situation escalated rapidly.
Deputy Director Matthew Quinn said, "only one bystander was hit by the suspect," adding the victim was a "juvenile" and "did not sustain any life-threatening injuries."
He further noted the injured person was receiving medical care.
"But he's also receiving treatment at the hospital," Describing how events unfolded, Quinn explained that Secret Service officers first observed the individual acting in a suspicious way.
The situation escalated when contact was made.
He said the suspect’s actions turned violent: "individual fled briefly on foot, withdrew a firearm, and fired in the direction of our agents and officers."
Quinn did not provide details on the suspect’s condition, stating that it remains under review as the investigation continues.
