UN Security Council Denounces Deadly Israeli Strikes on UNIFIL

(MENAFN) The UN Security Council on Wednesday issued a formal condemnation of Israeli strikes targeting UN Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) positions in late March, following an assault that killed three Indonesian peacekeepers and wounded five others.

"The members of the Security Council expressed their deepest condolences and sympathy to the families of the victims, as well as to Indonesia," the council said in a statement, offering tribute to those serving under the UN flag in one of the world's most volatile border zones.

The council flagged a pattern of incidents endangering UNIFIL personnel, noting that peacekeepers had repeatedly been harmed "against the backdrop of ongoing hostilities along the Blue Line." It extended wishes for recovery to the injured, adding: "They paid tribute to the dedication and service of all United Nations peacekeepers who risk their lives in the cause of international peace and security and expressed their deep appreciation to UNIFIL's troop-contributing countries."

In firm language, the council reaffirmed its unconditional backing for UNIFIL, demanding that all parties uphold the safety, security, and freedom of movement of its personnel and facilities in strict accordance with international law — explicitly calling on parties to refrain from any actions that could endanger peacekeeping forces.

The body further underscored that peacekeepers are never a legitimate target under any circumstances, and urged the UN to conduct a thorough investigation through UNIFIL while keeping Indonesia informed throughout the process, consistent with relevant Security Council resolutions.

The statement closed with a call for the full implementation of Resolution 1701, reiterating the council's strong commitment to Lebanon's sovereignty, independence, territorial integrity, and national unity.
