Vietnam Airlines Slash Flights as Jet Fuel Costs Hit Record Highs

(MENAFN) Vietnamese carriers are moving to scale back domestic operations and suspend select routes beginning next month, as surging jet fuel prices force the country's aviation sector into a sweeping operational overhaul, Vietnamese newspaper Nhan Dan reported Friday.

Citing the Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam, the report said airlines across the country are actively revising their route networks and capacity schedules in a bid to stay financially viable amid relentlessly climbing fuel costs.

National carrier Vietnam Airlines is set to suspend seven domestic routes from April 1, and may implement broader cuts of between 10% and 20% in total flight volume should jet fuel prices climb to the $160–$200 per barrel range, the report said.

Domestic routes are forecast to bear the heaviest burden, with projected capacity reductions ranging from 12% to 26%. International services are not immune either, facing potential cuts of between 4% and 18% depending on how fuel markets evolve.

Budget operator Pacific Airlines announced plans to trim capacity by 8% to 30% from April 1, concentrating reductions during off-peak travel windows. Meanwhile, VietJet Air is set to slash overall flight capacity by 18%, with the bulk of those cuts targeting domestic operations.

Authorities indicated that carriers are prioritising the preservation of service on the country's most critical air corridors — particularly those connecting Hanoi, Da Nang, and Ho Chi Minh City — alongside routes deemed essential for socio-political and economic connectivity.

Passenger costs are also expected to rise, with airlines weighing fuel surcharges and higher base ticket prices from April as supply conditions remain volatile and fuel expenditure stays elevated.

Vietnamese aviation authorities have meanwhile escalated calls for emergency government support, urging temporary tax relief measures and steps to stabilise fuel supply chains to safeguard the continuity of the country's air transport network.
