Russia, Ukraine Talks in Geneva to be in Trilateral Format Only

(MENAFN) The Kremlin on Friday clarified that the forthcoming peace negotiations between Russia and Ukraine in Geneva, Switzerland, will strictly follow a trilateral structure, without the inclusion of any European delegates.

"No, it's only a trilateral format, meaning Russia, America, and Ukraine. There won't be any Europeans there," Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov stated during a press briefing, dismissing any potential involvement of the EU or international organizations.

The discussions, set for Feb. 17-18, were previously confirmed by Peskov as the subsequent stage of a mediation effort spearheaded by Washington. He further noted that Russia's delegation in the talks will be headed by presidential aide Vladimir Medinsky.

Earlier on Friday, Peskov confirmed that an accord had been reached to conduct the next round of peace talks "next week," though he did not offer additional details.

In January and earlier this month, Russia and Ukraine conducted two rounds of US-mediated peace negotiations in Abu Dhabi, the capital of the United Arab Emirates. These meetings resulted in an agreement for the first prisoner exchange in five months.

Preparations for a new round of discussions have been underway since the Feb. 4-5 talks, with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy indicating that the sessions are expected to occur on Feb. 17-18, according to remarks he made to a media outlet published on Wednesday.

US officials have not yet responded to Peskov's comments, while Zelenskyy's communications advisor Dmytro Lytvyn also confirmed the timing and venue of the talks in statements to Ukrainian media.
