Finland Secures USD1.07B U.S. Missile Sale

(MENAFN) The United States on Wednesday greenlit a major arms deal with Finland, authorizing the potential sale of advanced air-to-air missiles and support equipment worth approximately $1.07 billion, according to a statement from the U.S. Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA).

“The State Department has made a determination approving a possible Foreign Military Sale to the Government of Finland of AIM-120D-3 Advanced Medium Range Air-to-Air Missiles and related equipment for an estimated cost of $1.07 billion,” the DSCA said.

As outlined in the agency’s press release, Finland has formally requested the purchase of “up to four hundred five (405) AIM-120D-3 Advanced Medium Range Air-to-Air Missiles (AMRAAM); and eight (8) AIM-120D-3 guidance sections, with precise positioning provided by either the Selective Availability Anti-Spoofing Module or M-Code.”

The agency emphasized the strategic benefits of the deal, noting that the transaction “will support the foreign policy and national security objectives of the United States by improving the security of a NATO Ally that is a force for political stability and economic progress in Europe.”

The DSCA stated that Finland already operates AMRAAM systems, positioning its military to seamlessly integrate the newly proposed equipment into existing defense frameworks. The agency also maintained that the sale would have no impact on the overall military balance in the region.

The U.S. State Department has formally approved the prospective arms transfer, and the DSCA has submitted the required notification to Congress, which must now review and authorize the deal before it can proceed.
