Rubio Holds Phone Talks with China’s Foreign Minister
(MENAFN) U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio underscored the need for "open and constructive communication" during a phone call Wednesday with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, according to a statement released by the State Department.
"Secretary Rubio emphasized the importance of open and constructive communication on a range of bilateral issues," the statement read.
"They also discussed other global and regional issues as a continuation of the discussions in Kuala Lumpur," it added.
The call follows a July meeting between the two officials on the sidelines of the ASEAN Regional Forum in Kuala Lumpur, where both parties described their discussions as "positive and constructive," despite underlying frictions over U.S. tariffs on Chinese goods.
This latest engagement comes at a moment of heightened strain between Washington and Beijing, just days after a massive military parade in Tiananmen Square brought together the leaders of China, Russia, and North Korea.
U.S. President Donald Trump strongly condemned the event, portraying the assembly of the Chinese, Russian, and North Korean leaders as a clear sign of an emerging anti-American alliance. He accused the trio of conspiring against the United States during China’s largest-ever military parade, which highlighted the country's expanding military power.
