Croatia Says It “Will Not Take Part” in Ukraine War

(MENAFN) Croatian President Zoran Milanovic on Monday firmly ruled out any involvement of Croatian troops in the war in Ukraine, saying the country "will not take part in 'other people's wars.'"

In a Facebook post, Milanovic reaffirmed that Croatia’s responsibilities extend only to its formal alliances: “Croatia is a member of the European Union and NATO and only has obligations arising from membership in these alliances,” he stated.

He also made clear that Zagreb is not beholden to informal military arrangements: “Croatia has no obligations stemming from political or military agreements among leaders of the so-called ‘Coalition of the Willing,’” Milanovic said, adding, “the Croatian government is not authorized to push the country into any new coalitions that could involve the deployment of Croatian soldiers in Ukraine.”

The Croatian leader has consistently voiced opposition to sending national forces to the front lines of Ukraine. He has previously condemned U.S. and NATO strategy, accusing them of engaging in a proxy war against Moscow and labeling Western sanctions on Russia as “absurd” and “useless.”

In July, Milanovic publicly urged Western governments to re-engage diplomatically with the Kremlin in order to bring the fighting to a close.
