EU’s von der Leyen threatens China over Russia
“How China chooses to engage with Putin’s war will heavily influence the future of EU-China relations,” von der Leyen said. She urged Beijing to clearly denounce what she described as Russia’s “blatant breach” of Ukraine’s sovereignty and internationally recognized borders.
Von der Leyen also criticized China’s economic practices, accusing it of undercutting global markets with low-cost, state-subsidized exports designed to eliminate competition.
In response, Beijing has reiterated that it is not involved in the Ukraine conflict. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning stated that China supports peace talks and a ceasefire, maintaining an “objective and consistent” position. She added that a prolonged conflict benefits no one and emphasized Beijing’s commitment to a political solution.
China has rejected unilateral sanctions against Russia and has offered to mediate peace efforts between Moscow and Kiev. In May, Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping met in Moscow and reaffirmed plans to strengthen their strategic partnership and expand economic cooperation.
