Australian researchers locate habitats of killer whale

(MENAFN) Australian researchers have completed the first comprehensive mapping of killer whale habitats across the country, offering new insight into the species' presence and distribution in local waters.

While killer whales are well documented in the Northern Hemisphere and Antarctic regions, their patterns around Australia have remained largely uncharted—despite frequent sightings along all coastlines throughout the year. This study, led by Flinders University in South Australia, aims to close that gap.

Using 40 years of data encompassing 1,310 verified sightings and advanced species distribution modeling, researchers identified three major habitats for killer whales: the Bonney Upwelling (spanning South Australia and Victoria), the Bremer Sub-basin, and Ningaloo Reef off the coast of Western Australia.

Lead researcher Marissa Hutchings noted that the newly developed national map reveals the presence of at least two distinct killer whale types—temperate and tropical. She emphasized the urgent need for focused conservation efforts, as many of these critical areas currently lack full protection.

The study also highlights increasing threats to the species from human activities and calls for stronger cooperation between scientists, conservationists, and marine industry stakeholders to enhance data monitoring and develop effective management strategies.
